Great British Bake Off producer Kieran Smith has revealed a big change in the upcoming series after viewer complaints.

Each week, Channel 4 viewers watch the contestants tackle different themes within the competition, one of which includes a national-themed week.

In the past, the hopeful bakers have tackled Japan Week, German Week and Mexican week last year.

However, as hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding wore ponchos, sombreros and held maracas, fans weren’t impressed.

At the time, Noel said: “I don’t feel like we should make Mexican jokes, because people will get upset.”

Matt replied: “Not even Juan?”

As a series of puns were made throughout the episode viewers accused the show of cultural appropriation and quickly shared their outrage with the themed week online.

Due to the mass backlash it received, producer Kieran Smith told The Guardian it won’t be making a comeback for the upcoming 13th series.

He said: “I hold my hands up to the cooking complaint and the theme weeks.

“We didn’t want to offend anyone but the world has changed and the joke fell flat. We’re not doing any national themes this year.”

Instead, Kieran detailed how fans will see more traditional weeks with themes of cakes, bread, chocolate, biscuits and the new theme of party cakes.

He teased: “No spoilers, but it features challenges I think viewers will love.”

Last year, judge Paul Hollywood spoke about the outrage from fans over the national-themed week and confessed he was “gutted” by the reaction.

Speaking Eater, he explained he’d just come back from the country after spending over a month there.

He explained: “I was all over the place, and we set the challenges based on what I’d seen there, the challenges were very good, and everyone did a good job.”

Although there’s yet to be an official release date for the Channel 4 show, fans can expect to see another big change as This Morning’s Alison Hammond is joining.

Replacing Matt Lucas, Alison will be presenting alongside Noel Fielding who’s been part of the Bake Off family since 2017.
