Alison Hammond reveals The Great British Bake Off 2023 winner
The Great British Bake Off finally crowned its winner tonight after whittling down 12 bakers over 10 weeks of intensive competition.
Matty Edgell, from Peterborough, won the coveted cake stand after impressing judges over the past two and a half months of the contest and looked visibly shocked when host Alison Hammond announced his name.
The 28-year-old PE and Science Teacher was inspired to bake after his late nan made him a teddy bear cake for his fourth birthday.
He beat off stiff competition from fellow finalists Dan, 42, and Josh, 27, to triumph and his showstopper was deemed so good that Prue Leith went back for seconds.
However, while he proved a popular choice many fans felt that Josh would have been a more deserving victor.

@Cjbex chimed in: “Nooooo I’m actually gutted, Josh deserved to win so much #gbbo.” @Shaw91Matt concurred saying: “Matty is a great bloke but based on what we’ve just seen, Josh was robbed #GBBO.”
@DrPJJB opined: “Not convinced the right baker was crowned this evening Josh was my winner from Day 1 Excellent series to watch however… #GBBO.”
@BeckyMollon simply said: “Josh was robbed #GBBO.” Meanwhile, @Laura__McNulty said: “Pru and Paul were far too harsh on Josh there, you could tell it properly deflated him #GBBO.”
@wildesttiptoes also felt for Josh although they were championing Matty throughout. They said: “I was rooting for Matty through the whole series (we’re from the same city) so I’m so happy for him. I am disappointed for Josh though because he had been the most consistent #GBBO.”

After host Alison Hammond announced Matty winner of the show, Dan and Josh ran and hugged him with both looking delighted for him.
“People said I should go on Bake Off and I never really listened to it. I never thought I’d get on it, let alone win it!” Matty exclaimed.
“There’s been so many ups, there’s been so many downs,” he reflected.
“There’s been so many times when I’ve had to be pulled through it by the people around me… It still doesn’t feel real.”
