Following multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish military facility, DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre are tasked with uncovering the cause.
Entering the hostile and closed ranks of the air force, the pair must face the deadly warfare of tomorrow as they fight for their own future.
The pair explore Britain’s arms dealing, drone weapons development, and its partnerships in the Middle East.
The new series will also explore a world of moral and political compromises, ethical disagreements and clashing institutional priorities.
As Suranne Jones reprises her role as DCI Amy Silva and Rose Leslie returns as DI Kirsten Longacre, we take a look at who else has joined the cast.
Who is in the cast of Vigil series 2, episode 1?
DCI Amy Silva – Suranne Jones
Amy Silva ended series one deciding to give her relationship with Kirsten a go and promising to look after Poppy.
Actress Suranne explained: "In this series, Kirsten is pregnant, they are very happy together and very much in love and Poppy is now living with them. So we see Amy really happy and in a very secure place in her life."
Suranne rose to prominence as Karen McDonald in Coronation Street from 2000 to 2004. She went on to star in Scott & Bailey, Doctor Foster and Gentleman Jack.
She is married to Laurence Akers and the pair have a seven year old son, who she welcomed back in 2016.
DI Kirsten Longacre – Rose Leslie
Kirsten is pulled in to help figure out why a military drone has started murdering soldiers on the ground at an airbase during a training exercise.
She is based in Scotland looking after Amy's daughter Poppy and the two are forced to work together across two continents.
Actress Rose was pregnant while filming the second series and bosses worked this into the storyline.
She explained: "They’ve really weaved it into the plot lines seamlessly as it almost echoes the first series whereby Amy departs to investigate and Kirsten stays put to work on the investigation on the ground."
Rose is best known for her role as Ygritte in Game of Thrones where she met her husband Kit Harington when they played lovers.
Rose, 26, is from Aberdeen and the couple have two children together.
Acting Squadron Leader Eliza Russell – Romola Gara i
Eliza has had to step up into the position as her immediate boss has mysteriously flown back to Scotland at the beginning of the series.
She has to step up into this position of power and she’s struggling in that position somewhat; trying to keep the squadron together after this terrible incident where some of their colleagues have been killed.
Romola, 41, is married to Sam Hoare and the pair have two children. She is also known for roles in Emma, The Hour, Atonement and Becoming Elizabeth.
Air Marshall Marcus Grainger – Dougray Scott
Grainger is an Air Vice Marshall, a very patriotic and proud member of the British military and the air force and he’s responsible for many of the arms sales to countries like Wudyan, our fictional middle-eastern country in the series.
Grainger is a pragmatist and very geo-politically aware, so he sees the intricacies of selling arms to countries in precarious positions in the world.
Actor Dougray, 58, was married to Sarah Trevis from 2000 to 2005 and married Claire Forlani in 2007.
He has two children and is also known for roles in Irvine Welsh's Crime, Ever After, and The Diplomat.
Robertson – Gary Lewis
Robertson sends his intrepid staff into dangerous and extremely perilous conditions with international geopolitical implications.
Robertson basically came through the ranks of police service so he’s got a lot of experience and he’s a principled man and a man of integrity – his job is to be a good cop and that’s very important to him.
Gary Lewis, 65, from Scotland is an actor who is also known for roles in Billy Elliot, Joyeux Noël, Gangs of New York and Eragon.
Ramsay – Amir El-Masry
Ramsay is a confident, cocky MI5 intelligence officer. Brought in by MI5 essentially as a co-investigator but also to annoy the hell out of Kirsten and Amy.
But perhaps that’s a by-product of him being so self-assured and confident in what he does.
Amir El-Masry, 33, is an Egyptian-British actor and won a Scottish BAFTA for his performance in Limbo.
He was named a 2020 BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and a 2021 Screen International Star of Tomorrow.
Callum Barker – Chris Jenks
Callum is troubled – he’s suffering from taking part in what he thinks is a morally questionable military operation.
He isn’t afraid to make his dissatisfaction known and rail against authority. As the series progresses, we see that he is trying to keep a secret from the world and we get to see a softer, more intimate Callum.
Chris Jenks is known for his roles in Sex Education, Karen Pirie and Miracle Workers.
