More than 200 areas across Britain remain on flood watch today following torrential rain that has deluged communities in recent weeks.

The Environment Agency has imposed 30 warnings for ‘expected’ flooding as well as 167 alerts for ‘possible’ flooding in England. While the alerts are spread out over the country, the warnings are concentrated in the South West and East Midlands.

Elsewhere the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has three alerts in place for eastern areas, while Natural Resources Wales has six alerts for central parts.

One alert in London covers a stretch of the River Thames from Teddington to Fulham. High tide at 2.15pm could bring flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths.

It comes after the Met Office said the amount of rain falling in England and Wales between December 1 and 9 was more than double what is normally expected.
