SIR Keir Starmer refused to guarantee the tax burden, the highest since World War 2, would not increase if they won the next election.
The Labour boss revealed he did want taxes to come down for working people if he seized the keys to Number 10.
Labour have said they will not play “fast and loose” with public finances in the wake of Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-Budget last September that crashed markets.
He said: "I want it to come down for working people.”
Sir Keir added he was "absolutely focused on growing the economy".
He added: "If the economy in the last 13 years had grown at the same rate as the last Labour government, we'd have tens of billions of pounds to spend on our public services without raising a penny more in tax.

Starmer “shamelessly” tried to deceive the public over illegal migration measures, it is claimed.
Ministers last night blasted the Labour leader for flip-flopping when he ruled out a returns scheme after hinting at a deal with the EU.
