Sir Billy Connolly was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013 and revealed he's suffered a number of falls due to his deteriorating balance.

The Scottish actor, 80, opened up about his battle with the disease in an interview with The Guardian alongside his wife of 34 years Pamela Stephenson. "It’s very difficult to see the progression exactly, because a lot of things come and go," the retired comedian told the publication. "Recently I've noticed a deterioration in my balance."

He confessed his struggle with balance began within the last year and hasn't shifted, adding: "For some reason, I thought it would go away, because a lot of symptoms have come and gone away … just to defy the symptom spotters."

Pamela, 73, said her husband's "balance issue" was the "most significant" hurdle since his diagnosis 10 years ago. She said: "Especially since, unfortunately, it resulted in you having a couple of serious falls." The former presenter responded: "It’s funny, that fall I had when I landed on my jaw reminded me of a thing I used to do on stage. I used to say, 'I fell out of bed, but luckily my face broke my fall…'."

Sir Billy explained he is struggling to walk more than 50 yards, admitting his deteriorating balance is "adding to the list of things that hold him back". The writer declared he is being "encroached upon" by the disease, which is a neurodegenerative condition that causes parts of the brain to become progressively damaged over many years. "It’s creeping up behind me and stopping me doing things. It’s a cruel disease," he added.

The couple also spoke about how their relationship had changed since Sir Billy's diagnosis. New Zealand-born Pamela has to dress her husband in the morning and Sir Billy has to "get lifts everywhere" as he can no longer drive. Sir Billy found out he had Parkinson's disease in 2013, – the same day he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which he later received the all clear for after undergoing minor surgery.
