A Place In The Sun star opens up over health battle after saying I cant do this

A Place in the Sun star Craig Rowe has opened up on how a health condition makes his working life ‘really hard’.

The 50 year old TV presenter, who has worked on the hit Channel 4 show since January 2022, is diabetic – which means he has to carefully monitor and maintain a balanced blood sugar level. But this can be challenging, he said, due to his hectic work schedule.

But, despite the busy workload and travelling that comes with appearing on A Place In The Sun, Craig said she has found ways to manage the condition. Two items are particularly important for this, he revealed.

Speaking about having diabetes to Express.co.uk, he said: “It's hard. I'm not gonna lie. It's really hard. I think two words – protein shake and a yoga mat. I've always got those two things with me because one of the ways to sort of help balance blood sugar is to keep the protein levels high.”

He went on to say that, when he first took on the A Place in the Sun job, he put on about a stone in weight because he was enjoying the buffet meals put on at the hotels where he stayed.

But he said this situation became “ridiculous” – before adding: "I just realised early on I can't keep doing this. So I will often take protein shakes, I'll just try and make good choices – chicken and fish when I'm away. I’ll have a salad.”

He also said he tries to work out in a gym after work as much as possible. And he always tries to find time to do "a little yoga and some push-ups", no matter what time he finishes filming.

According to the World Health Organisation, diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose. Diabetes causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

Craig is an ambassador for Diabetes UK, a charity that campaigns for improvements in the care and treatment of people with diabetes, and despite the extra effort that has to go into controlling his condition – he said he still loved his job. And the presenter is not the only A Place In The Sun star that has faced a health battle recently.

Jonnie Irwin, who has also hosted the show, announced last year that he had terminal lung cancer. The 50 year old TV star, who said he did not know how long he had left to live after the cancer spread to his brain, earlier this year discussed how was yet to tell his three young children about his terminal diagnosis as it would "confuse" them.

He also recently opened up about palliative care during an interview on Morning Live – saying it had been a “delight” and that it was not the “doom and gloom operation” that many believe it to be.
